Something's Special About Summer

If you are anything like me, I'll bet you can't remember your first summer. In fact, believe it or not, about 0% of people actually remember experiencing summer for the first time. Crazy, right? With all kidding aside, as most kids did, I absolutely adored the summer. There was something amazing about the chirping of birds, the colourful flowers and the gentle sunbeams, not to mention the freedom of the break from school.

During my childhood years, I waited and longed for each summer to come. As I grew up and left school, things began to change. Summer no longer was a time of freedom and fun, but rather just another season of the year. Now I rarely spend much extra time outside during the summer or really take in all the beauty that it has to offer.

Do you know the look of awe that people have when they see something incredible for the first time? Whether it's an adult's first ever trip to see Niagara Falls, a child's discovery of the detail of a snowflake, or even a baby's first December, when he can't take his eyes off the Christmas lights, there is glimpse of wonder in each set of eyes. The more we experience the same things, no matter how amazing they may be, the less and less we are actively aware of how incredible they really are.

Just like with many other things in life, I feel like for most adults, summer has become one of those incredible things that has become very much taken for granted. We can get so caught up in the busyness of life that we forget to take the time to soak in the amazement and wonder in magical details that summer has to offer.

As the season of summer is just around the corner, I want to challenge myself and you as well, to look at it once again with fresh eyes. Summer doesn't have to be another block of time passing us by. Let's literally and figuratively stop and smell the flowers. Take the time to notice colours in the gardens, and the intricate design of the insects that stop to say hello. Don't be afraid to stare in wonder as you notice the detail of the weeds in the grass and feel the softness of the gentle breeze that perfectly contrasts the scorching sun.

As summer approaches, may this time be a sense of new discovery for us all, whether we spend it near or far from home. My we all take the chance to recognize the uniqueness and beauty that this new season has to bring to us and to have the eyes to look at life once again in awe of how incredible it really is.
